Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: This is my great-great-great- great-grandfather.
I was curious about the style, since it looks like a photo.
APPRAISER: In the early part of the 20th century, what we refer to as sun enlargements were very popular.
Almost always in this oval format, almost always with a little bit of added embellishment, often color, as we see here.
So that's done by hand.
As an enlarged photograph, it would have really diminished the, uh, sharpness of an image.
So they added color, they added sometimes graphite embellishments to bring out the detail of the image.
It would have been kind of a common thing to see in someone's home at that time.
The thing that makes this a little bit special is, it's a bit bigger than a lot of these sun enlargements were, and it's in great condition.
GUEST: Yeah.
APPRAISER: So it's been really well taken care of by your family, which is great.
GUEST: It's been loved, yes.
APPRAISER: I would say it's $400 to $500.
GUEST: Uh-huh, thank you-- aw, thank you, yeah.
Um, so it's special, yeah.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: I don't care what he is, he's priceless.
APPRAISER: Yeah, of course-- of course.
(both laugh)
