♪♪ (applause) LUKE: Hello everyone and welcome to "We Are Family, Songs of Hope and Unity", the music we selected tonight we hope brings you inspiration, comfort and joy and who better to host the evening than Emmy and Tony award winning actor Judith Light.
JUDITH: Thank you, Luke and what an extraordinary take on Ray Charles' arrangement of "America The Beautiful."
I am so very delighted to join you tonight and to be with the American Pops Orchestra to share this incredible evening of music.
Music and the arts bring us into a world of oneness.
It's therefore no secret, that music is universal and it doesn't matter where you're from, what language you speak, or what side of the political aisle you're on, music brings us together.
It's all around us, provides inspiration, comfort, hope, joy and beyond.
If you think about it, the arts define us and when it's all said and done the music that we create is how we will be remembered as a civilization.
Tonight's music was chosen to remind us that we are all in this together.
American artist like the extraordinary James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Gloria Gaynor, Sam Cook, Carole King and more have been responsible for creating this sound track to so many moments in our lives.
So tonight, we share these performances not only to inspire you but also to encourage you to remember that this music is our music and whether were celebrating or feel like we're at our lowest and have nowhere else to turn, music brings us together.
In 1971, Carol King wrote a song which inspired generations of music lovers, many have recorded this hit song over the years.
