It's a song that not only saved my career, but it probably saved my life.
I got told no like a lot of people do in Nashville a lot of times.
But, there was one particular time that I was- when I got told no and got told to go home, I was gonna do it.
I was gonna go home, I was gonna pack.
I was gonna go back to North Carolina.
I was done.
And, I had the Austin Sessions, Kris Kristofferson.
And the song that came on was "To Beat the Devil" which is about that.
It's about a guy who gets told no a lot.
And, it talks about one more time and not listening to that and persevering through that.
So, because of that song, I stayed in town.
And the next day I got an offer for a composing deal at Sony.
So, that song kept me in town, it kept me here.
So, it's probably not the most, it's probably not the song that's the most popular, you know, of stuff he's done, but to me it's the best writing I've ever heard and it's personal for me because it saved my life.
I'm here because of that man right there.
["To Beat the Devil"] (audience cheering) ♪ It was wintertime in Nashville down on Music City Row.
And I was looking for a place to get myself out of the cold.
To warm the frozen feeling that was eating at my soul, keep the chilly wind off my guitar.
My thirsty wanted whiskey but my hunger needed beans.
It had been a month of paydays since I'd heard that eagle scream.
So with a stomach full of empty and a pocket full of dreams, I left my pride and stepped inside a bar.
Actually I guess you could call it a tavern.
Cigarette smoke to the ceiling and sawdust on the floor, friendly shadows.
I saw that there was just one old man sitting at the bar.
And in the mirror, I could see him checking out me and my guitar.
And he turned and said, "Come up here, boy, and show us who you are."
I said, I'm dry, and he bought me a beer.
He nodded at my guitar and said, "It's a tough life, ain't it?"
I just looked at him.
He said, "You ain't making any money, are you boy?"
I said, "Mister, you been reading my mail."
And, he just smiled and said, "Let me see that guitar.
I got something you ought to hear."
