(person laughing) - [Katie] I started getting older and he like didn't know how to talk to me anymore.

(dramatic instrumental music) And maybe he stopped understanding me, and then I stopped understanding him, and now we're here.

About your father?

He was one of the very first Paraguayan's to film a digital video.

(tape player clatters) (upbeat instrumental music) (speaking foreign language) (people laughing) (speaking in foreign language) (children singing in foreign language) - [Panfilo] We don't have a camera in Paraguay.

A few people have, not that many.

I don't remember what kind of camera we used.

I seen the big camera.

- [Katie] My dad came to America in 1980 something.

The first place he went was New York, I think.

He went out in California one time to try to pursue that filming feeling he had.

(tape player clatters) There's a lot of videos of him in Hollywood (person laughing) and he is talking in the videos.

He's talking to the Paraguayan family, being like, "Look where I am."

(speaking in foreign language) (tape player clatters) - [Panfilo] I'm not a filmmaker, that's a different thing.

But what I did is video maker.

- [Katie] Well, I think what you filmed was still really important.

- [Panfilo] I feel a lot of story.

I mean, what I did is only fun thing.

And then when I feel a bit the video for the family also, I really like it.

(tape player clatters) So for get a memory as to last for long time.

(tape player clatters) (speaking in foreign language) (speaking foreign language) - [Panfilo] Well, the thing I do the video was, I love it.

Not those time.

- [Katie] Hmm.

- [Panfilo] I really like it.

(people laughing) - [Katie] When you ask me what my dad is like, I'm saying he used to be fun.

I don't know.

He was very, he talked to us a lot - Yeah, I got you.

Then we stopped understanding each other and now he's... (people mumbling) very angry.

I mean, the documentary is about you.

- [Katie] No.

You as my dad... - [Panfilo] Oh.

- [Katie] And me as your daughter.

- [Panfilo] I don't know.

- [Katie] I think sometimes you be saying stuff that I think, you know, that upsets me.

I don't know.

I just remember being a kid and everything was cool.

And I remember growing up being a teenager.

- [Panfilo] Uh huh.

- [Katie] Things were a little harder.

- [Panfilo] Like what?

- [Katie] When I was cutting my hair and I was dressing the way I wanted to dress.

- [Panfilo] But why I say to you, you remember that?

It's just weird saying it to you.

(person sighs) And I didn't want to hear that from my dad.

I just have this one memory (people laughing) (person sniffles) (people cheering) that you said I looked ugly.

(person sighs) (speaking foreign language) I wouldn't say that you, it didn't feel like you were just accepting me.

I feel like if you were accepting me, you would not say stuff like that.

It doesn't feel nice.

Like, it really feels like you don't like me.

I don't expect my dad to change.

Maybe we'll grow closer someday or maybe we'll always struggle to understand each other.
